at our last post, we talked about some places in Spain used as locations for Game of Thrones’ 5th season:
- El Alcázar de Sevilla, used for the scenes on the Water Gardens, Dorne.
- Plaza de Toros de Osuna, which is the fictional Meereen arena.
- Puente Romano de Córdoba, or if you prefer, the Long bridge of Volantis!

Las Bardenas Reales, in Navarre
an extraordinary landscape in Navarre, in the north of Spain, called Las Bardenas Reales, has become the vast Dothraki Sea, home to wandering hordes of khalasars.
the Royal (reales) Bardenas are called like that because they were once the patrimony of the kings of Navarre. though the land is uninhabited, shepherds have overwintered sheep there since the Middle Ages and farmers have been growing wheat there since the end of the 19th century. besides being a Natural Park and a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, in the middle of it, fenced off behind warning notices, the biggest military zone in western Europe is located!

Barri Vell, Girona
as the barri vell (old quarter) is a neighbourhood, filming affected more people than other locations and lots of pictures were took by locals on the days of pre-production and shooting.
the steps of the cathedral in the magnificent medieval city of Girona were used as the Great Sept for King’s Landing.
many more places in Girona served as the dark city of Braavos: The Pujada de Sant Domènec, the abbey of Sant Pere de Galligants, Jurats square and some other narrow streets in the oldtown.
barri vell is the name given to the Girona’s old quarter. behind the typical view of the houses on the River Onyar, visitors discover an architectural legacy that mixes the brushstrokes of the Baroque monuments of the cathedral steps and the Pujada de Sant Domènec, or the façade and steps of Sant Feliu Church, with the elegant sobriety of the Romanesque buildings, such as the old monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants or the Arab Baths.

Castillo Santa Florentina, Canet del Mar
the whole atmosphere of this impressive castle ideally suites the most famous fantasy drama television series. it is doubling as Horn Hill, the seat of House Tarly, vassals of the Tyrells.
St. Florentina’s castle was built on the place of so-called “Domus”, the type of old Roman house occupied by nobility. Domus represented not only the centre of winemaking in the region but also one of the first centres for ancient settlements. in the 11th century the building served as a fortification from frequent pirate attacks. the remains of the building are still a part of St. Florentina’s Castle.

Costa del Azahar, Peñíscola
all the filming spots in the city of Peñíscola served as Meereen, the city conquered by Daenerys Targaryen in Slaver’s Bay.
1.200 local extras where hired for the shooting in this location last fall.

the fortified citadel of the Alcazaba of Almería was Sunspear, capital of Dorne, one of the of the Seven Kingdoms.

the impressive silhouette of Zafra Castle in Guadalajara was used to represent the Tower of Joy.
